I am setting up another 90 Litre (20 gl) Hexagon Tank.

I was thinking maybe i might put a fighting fish, and some guppies, or even some tetras in there?

Thoughts people, do guppies and fighting fish get along? I know i cant have more than 1 male fighting fish, but do they mix with females of there own kind ok?

I want it to be a communial tank, no fighting, or nasty fish please Lol

How many fish if i go for the guppies, or fighting fish can i have in this space?

I am wanting to add some live plants too...

Thanx Claire x

More than one fighting fish (betta) in the same tank is a no no.

Keeping a male and female betta together is also a no no (except when bringing them together briefly for spawning).

Keeping female bettas can/has been done but you need to know what you are doing.

Bettas and guppies are also dodgy, due to the long flowing fins of the guppies, bettas perceive them as rivals.

You could go for:

either one betta with non-nippy fish without long fins of their own (corydoras for the bottom, maybe rasboras for the middle layers)

or guppies with non-nippy fish or on their own.

Arnt Chilids nasty?

My brother has 3 and had to take 1 back, as it attacked his fighting fish, he had to quarantine it, now the other 2 are attacking it !!

So all round its best i dont have a fighting fish at all? As the other fish will bite it?

sorry i dont know too much about them but i have a mate who has a chiclid tank with a fair few in there and he doesnt have and problems. i may be completely wrong here but i *think* you need to have just a few with their territory marked out or many so that they have no defined territory.

but there's not two ways about it, they are mighty pretty fish. just a thought :)

if i ever get another tank id def. considder getting cichlids (chiclids?). after research of course.

you mentioned they attacked the fighting fish, but they didnt attack eachother...

as i said i dont know lots about them

edit: me fail english that unpossible

That's about 23 gallon so you won't be able to stock too many. Tetras and rasboras make good community fish. I particularly like Harlequin Rasboras and wold love to have some if I had a tank with room. Rainbows are also quite pretty and may be the most colorful of all FW fish other than livebearers like guppies and platys. You could also go with some corys for the bottom. I will second eveything already said about bettas. They are risky in a community tank but can work.

The down side to guppies is that they are live bearers so you will have lots of fry. You can let nature run it's course (they will eat the fry) or you can set up a seperate fry tank but then you have to have a tank to put the fish in as they mature (multiple tanks). And live bearers can "store" sperm so a female in a tank alone can keep having fry for up to 6 months or so without a male to fertilize the eggs. That's a lot of fry.

Bettas (aka Fighting Fish) can be pretty aggresive towards other fish too. It all depends on the personality of the betta, some are soooo mellow and get along with others, then there are the ones who think that they're JAWS! You could try it but be prepared to put him in a separate tank if there are problems.

Thanx guys...

After some consideration, and reading, i think i will have tetra's and some cory's.

How many Cory's ? do they need to be in shoals?

Does it matter if i mix different breeds of Tetra's? Will they all get along? These need to be in shoals, so how many would u advise?

Cory's should be 2-3 at least. Tetras need to have a mature tank (running about 4 months min) to survive properly, so if it's new hold on for a while! Normally best to have a minium of about 5 of these fish. Agree rasboras are good, or mountain minnows?

ebay works well for 2nd hand tanks, usually at least half the price...just check for ones near you as most are pickup only! :p
