I have a lightly planted 55 gal. The plants are doing well. It's low tech only 1 wpg + natural light. I use Flourish excel Iron and Flourish tabs That I stick in the sand. I only have a breeding pair of acaras and a medusa pleco in the tank for now.

The 36 Gal has been set up for 2 years now. I just redid the substrate from big gravel to Sand with a dash of small gravel. I took out the ugly cheap fake log and added rocks and more wood. I have fake plants in till my new light comes.

This tank will have 1.8 wpg just a little bit of natural light. I will use the same stuff as I do for the 55 gal. only thing is I did not put a layer of Leterite with this tank. Here are my plant picks.

Java moss ( has been the only plant in the tank for 1 year)
3 Ceratopteris thalictroides "Watersprite"
3 Crypt spiralis
7 Sagittaria subulata "Dwarf Subulata"
2 Cryptocoryne pontederiifolia
1 Crypt petchii

Maybe some java fern on the wood. I have lots of baby from my 55 gal.

Here are the before and afters.

you need to dose the water column more than you do the 55 due to not havoing a nutrient rich substrate. Buy some flourish and dose that,
