Hey everyone. I just set up a brakishtank and the people at the LFS told me 2 1/2 tsp per gallon this sound right? Also, I just used regualr substrate is this okay? I just want a couple of puffers and thats all.

it would be best to buy a hydrometer, this will save messing around with inaccurate tea spoon measurements.

As Paul said, get a hydrometer.

What sort of puffer are you going to keep? The amount of salt you will need depends on the species i.e. South american puffer = SG (Specific Gravity) of 1.000 (FW), Figure 8 = SG 1.005, Green Spotted Puffer = SG depends on age but an adult can be kept in marine conditions SG 1.020 - 1.024. Whatever type you are getting, post it here, someone will have one.

I planned on a figure eight. I will check using the hydrometer and post it on here. Also at the LFS they keep alot of different fishwith them. is this a good idea?

Okay just checked the salinity is between 1.012 and 1.014 is this to salty for a Figure 8 puffer? I really like them. Also, is it okay to keep this with regular substrate that is what they have at the LFS.

Hi BlueRam22

Yes thats too salty for a figure 8. Ideal would be 1.005, so bring it down at least under 1.008.

As for mixing with other fish, generally No, not a good idea although some people keep gobies without any problems, better safe than sorry with puffers.

Sand is the best substrate for puffers as many like to play in the sand, my F8 curls up in the sand at night.

i've got knight gobies, bumblebee gobies and candystripe gobies in with my figure 8's at the moment, theyre only juveniles and its a recently set-up tank but no probs so far, although am prepared to have to seperate them in future if necessary. If anything the knights seem to be the most aggressive in the tank, especially at feeding time... i've seen them take beefheart out of the puffers beaks

I wouldn't recommend knight gobies as they share the same strata of the tank as puffers mid to bottom. Where as bumblebees are more bottom and smaller and tend to go unnoticed.

You can have driftwood, I intend to put some bog wood in mine. I have been soaking it for a month though, and you will need to check your ph regularly, I have an electric meter to do this.
