I'm converting my 125 into my new turtle tank. I'm making a platform from plexi that will hang about 7" into the tank and be 2-3" deep. This will give the turtles plenty of swim room as well as some larger fish I may add to the tank. I'd like to get some type of substrate and plants for the platform to dress the tank up a little and make it more natural for the turtles. Any suggestion on low maintence plants

Java fern does well emmersed. Anubias, Amazon swords, crypts etc. Even hair grass if you comb it.
Pretty much anything that looks like it will support itself out of water.
Just keep the humidity high in the air above.

IMO

I'd recommend anubias, my favourite plant. In the wild they grow on river banks and are only submersed when the rains come in, so they can easily grow out of water as long as there's moisture nearby.

Yea I figure that I have 2 red ears, I made a shelf that sits above the water line so they can't get on it but the bottom is in the water for irrigation.

my daughter would like some turtles soon and this sounds quite interesting for planting. do you have any pictures?

Once my move is complete and I get a new laptop ill post pics of the new setup. If you email me at [email protected] I can email you a current setup pic. My wife got these as the quarter size from China town thinking they are cute. Couple hundred bucks later she hates them so my daughter and I take care of them although they are not something to be taken out and played with just look at.

I dunno how well it will work to be honest. Red ear sliders may dig out of the water and they WILL dig in the water. Turtles produce a LOT of waste which is why we don't keep fish with them as they are much more sensitive than turtles. Red ear sliders will also eat the fish. I also don;t think amazon swords will work, and keep in mind that crypts tend to melt when moved, so don't give up for the first few weeks on your crypt.
