Right a friend told me you can buy bacteria or something in a bag at my local fish shop. I suppose this would be as opposed to mature filter media? Anyone know anything about this and would because I'm moving house. I have seen the guide which says about the same water types etc. and not having to use the same tank water if your moving to an area with the same water quality (tap) So being naive would it be possible to just transport the fish and the empty tank, add tap water and some boiling water to get it up to the correct temperature and simply throw in some bacteria and it'll be ready for the fish?

Usually products that say they contain bacteria are nothing but a waste of money. You could debate weather it contained bacteria in the first place, but by the time you buy it off the shelf and add it to your tank. Any bacteria in the bag or bottle is most likely dead. It would help to know the product as some are more likely to work than others.

Snake oil.... the bacteria we need use oxygen, want oxygen, NEED oxygen... thats only provided by a constant flow of water !

If you are moving a mature tank, theres a few guides on the forum, and it can be done successfully.... ive done it several times.
Ditch all the water (apart from the stuff you transport the fish in !) and replace at the other end - dont forget to dechlor and bring up to temp BEFORE adding the filter.

Not quite 'ALL' the water, as well as keeping your fish in some you should also keep your filter, (or at least the media), in some too :good:
