i have recently noticed a "seedling" coming out of the gravel far from any of the other plants. how often does this happen ???

It will likely be on a "runner" coming under the sand from some of your established plants. You can often get a chain of little plantlets from these.

Yup, a whole variety of our plants that we grow, ranging from vallis, swords, crypts and most of the carpet plants will send off runners. I've just pulled a whole tray full of pygmy chain swords and various vallis that pretty much came up with the soil in one solid mat because of the density of the runners, that tank had needed maintenance for a while.

What's the plant? Stem plants do this as a way of propagation, a bit falls off and reroots elsewhere.

my tank at the moment

OK, those swords will runner once they get established if they're happy. The lilaeposis will definitely send off runners, that's what I just emptied out of a propogator. The elodea in the back could break off and reroot, although it tends to be less subtle than that and just break off and send down roots. Not sure what that is in the front left, it's quite small.
