I'm in the process of setting up my new 400 litre tank which has got an external filter with foam pads, rena biostars/ceramic rings/and some form of activated carbon.

I've also got a 70 litre tank with a small internal filter that has been going for 3/4 months. The internal filter simply has a foam pad which acts as a filter.

If I wanted to kickstart the new large tank, would it make sense to cut the foam pad that is in the established internal filter in half and put half of it in with the new external filter. If so, should I just stick it in the section with the biostars/ceramic rings?

It always make very good sense to put established filter media in a new filter if possible but it is not a magic wand. It certainly helps but a great deal of patience and restraint is still required. ;)
I would suggest that you put the established media nearest the inlet end of your filter (but after the fine mechanical filtration media) then the flow of water will encourage the bacteria to migrate as it grows to the rest of the media. (my view, not necessarily fact )

Also, I would suggest that you remove the activated carbon and keep it for when you have the occasion to use medications then use it for removal when done.

Lucky you, lovely sized tank. I take it you are going to do a 'fishless cycle'.....good luck with that :good:

What are you going to put in it?
