I’ve finally remembered what I have been meaning to ask all day.

If I get a second betta and house him in a tank that is about a meter and a half away from my current betta (they will be able to see each other) do you think they’ll flare and possibly get stressed out by seeing another betta?

Nah, I doubt they will notice much of each other, if anything it would be more of a curious 'ohh what's that over there'

Should be fine, i kept two males side by side, they flared at first but after an hour or so weren't bothered at all by the other betta

Even if they did notice each other they'd get used to seeing each other and chill out soon enough. I have boys in a divided tank and after a week they just don't bother with each other :)

agreed it would be fine. they may flare a lot for a while, but will settle down and become bored of the "game". never had a problem in this respect (or using a mirror, which is the same concept as far as the fish is concerned).
cheers
