Seahorse Filter

ok, most of you have seen my seahorse thread. i was wodnering, what type of filter should i get? the trickle filter? there sis one at walmart, not for sure what type it is, but it has 2 sides that just drop the water back in. is that a trickle filter? i heard it helps to have a little surface movement for them.

btw, why are those wave simulator things like 100-200 dollars!? (for my clams)

The easiest best filtration will be the berlin method: live rock, powerheads and a skimmer.

A true trickle (or wet dry) filter has the media exposed to the air so that the bacteria colony can have access to far more oxygen than when sumberged.

Wet Drys have a tendancy to need frequent attention to prevent from becoming a nitrate trap (but are great for huge preadtory SW tanks) and as such should not be considered filter of choice for sea donkeys.

Most cheap wave simulators (under £200) are not that great. They constantly change the amount of power to the powerheads to try and make a more random movement in the tank, but most powerheads are not made to cope with this. The only powereheads I am aware of that are designed to take a constantly changing power input are the Tunze Streams. Using the cheaper wavemeakers on any other sort of powerhead will just cause the powerheads to have a shorter lifespan from inappropriate use.

There are some that sit in closed loop plumbing and alternate flow frm one way to another but these are far less common.

IMO most wavemakers are a waste of money ubless you are using a full Tunze system

i guess i will use the berlin method. it will be kidn of a reef tank. so there will also be clams and oysters to help clean too.

this will save me about $30-$40. if only there were creatures that could naturally heat water...

so is there no way to make water current for my clams that won't cost $100+?
