I am currently using API stress coat as my water conditioner.. so when i do a water change I put 0.6ml of it into each 5litre bucket before it goes into the tank...

When it runs out i'm going to start using seachem prime.. this is obviously much more concentrated (5ml for 200l or something).

I've heard that you can add it to the tank first then add normal tap water.. but that sounds a bit scary.. or i s'pose i could add 0.125.. (probably 0.2 just for ease lol)

What do you do?

You could just add the amount needed for each bucket to the bucket that you add to refill. That's what I do. I use a watering can and only add a tiny bit to each canfull of new water going in. Lots of people here add it to the tank first and then add the fresh water and I know it's ok, but like you I can't do it that way. It's good stuff and lasts for ages . You don't have to worry about putting a little more than recommended in, I read here before that you can add a fair bit more than the instructions say safely, once you don't do it all the time I suppose.

turn off filter(s), drain out water, add prime, put in water, turn on filter(s). job done.

I just do a bucket at a time swirling it round before adding to the tank this way I can get the right temperature . Had my bottle of prime for ages .

Was thinking about this myself, as my tank is tall when adding water it throws up the sand even if I only need to add a small amount of water.. Due to this I prefer to use a hosepipe to fill up the tank but this causes a problem with conditioner.. I also us Prime so what would be best to do add water then prime or add prime as I'm adding water via the pipe ??

If using a hosepipe its best to dose the tank directly, eg you dose for the entire volume of your tank, not just the volume you are changing. 5ml does roughly 200 litres. Just chuck it in the tank when you are filling it.

Tom.

this dosing bothers me a bit too...
My tanks are

66L
70L
60L
60L

this means i add 2.5ml for the volume of my tank. (roughly)

After using tapsafe, when i was adding 25-30ml, it always doesnt seem enough?!

You're overdosing then because it should be 1.5ml for the 60 and 1.75ml for the 70.

Most likely. Most dechlor's overdose with the standard dose apparently.

Prime (although ive never got round to buying any as ive never seen it in the shop while ive been buying my "bits") is apparently the most concentrated stuff you can get, so you use TINY amounts, hence it lasts so long.

The stuff i have currently is 10ml to every 15ltr, or a capful to every bucket. Shocking.

I found a Maidenhead aquatics not far from me so went to have a look.
Needed some dechlor so asked about the Prime.
They'd never heard of it?

Thats my local ('s, there are three around me), along with a P@H, which lets face it, are not the best for anything bottled in my experience.

Cant say ive ever asked MA about it, but its never on the shelf. I would expect if they have it in stock it would be on the shelf, if its not, they're daft lol.

Pour the water from your hose onto a plastic bucket lid or similar, wont kick up the sand then :good:
