I've just had a mini cycle in an established tank, so double checking everything.

I normally dechlorinate with Seachem Prime. I just happened to notice that the bottle I've been using smells really foul. I've checked Seachem's website and they advise that it should smell like sulfur.

However, I have a brand new bottle which smells completely different.

I can only describe the difference as ,

old bottle = definate sulfur, with hint of spice / mustard

new bottle = less sulfur, more like the hyroxide that comes in hairdye or tooth whitening bleech.

has my old bottle gone off? Anyone else noticed this?

Its the sulfur in it... Try not inhaling.

But, as snazy points out, there's no reason not to check the expiration date.  Its probably fine though.

The expiry date is fine
I meant peroxide not hydroxide btw

Despite the expense I think I will throw the old bottle it smells too different from the new one

My Seachem Prime always smells like something died in that bottle. Usually have to open a window to get rid of the smell after using it.

(sadly) . it's normal.

Perhaps the old bottle only smells worse because it's half empty (and the smell has more space to become airborne even before you take the lid off?) Just a guess..

I've been using the smelly stuff, and it works all the same

An excellent guess - this is most likely the source of the different smell - many more molecules airborne = stronger smell when you open the bottle.
