What does seachem matrix and de nitrate really do? do they really get rid of ammonia and nitrite. What's the difference between Seachem stability, and tetra safe start, do I need these products. If I have trouble with ammonia and nitrite should I purchase these products???

Hi King98:

Matrix and de*nitrate are filter media that serve as sites for the growth of the bacteria that process nitrogen compounds like ammonia and nitrite. Stability and SafeStart are bacterial additives that are supposed to introduce the beneficial bacteria and help speed up the establishment of the nitrogen cycle in your tank.

If you're detecting ammonia and nitrite then it would be best to look for the root cause of why the substances aren't being oxidized. Is your tank new or has it been established for awhile?

There's just a lot of ammnia in my aquarium, it has been established for 2 years, I have 3 filters a penguin power 350, aqua clear 50, and a sponge filter, it's a 55 gallon aquarium that's not fully stocked.

I assume you have tested for ammonia to know this? What was the level?

There should never be ammonia in a cycled aquarium (nor nitrite either). Test kits can be faulty, or there may be some problem. You might also specify the fish species and numbers to help us sort this out. Are there live plants? What substances if any are entering the tank water? Overfeeding?
