Hi,

Just a quick one guys, I'm considering a black spined sea urchin. Any horror storys I should know about? Are they gd critter to add? And can you mix different types of urchin? Is put a black spined in with a red Sea?

Cheers!

Lewis

Ps. Can Urchins ever poison fish with their spines??

how big is the tank?

i would get a short spied type. i have a tuxedo urchin in my 125L

Black ones are rock boring and its difficult to work in the tank with a creature like that in there

The tuxedo, is perfect for your tank, eats a small amount of coraline, so helps the rocks do their filtration job and do not hurt if your hand touches them :good:

Cheers guys, just looked up the Tuxedo Urchin looks great but I've never seen one in LFS, I really like the blue Tuxedo ones!

Anyone know where you can get one?

Thanks again for your advice. Seffie I might be being stupid but what does rock boring mean? They stay on the rocks?? And also what would a long spine do if you got stung?

if you want to buy corals and a sea urchin this is were i got mine
http://fishmansfrags.co.uk/shop/8-critters/10-urchins.html only reason i said that is because delivery is £15

rock boring is (i think) when they eat the rock and make lots of holes.
if you got stung well it would hurt

on a side note, my rock borers have never eaten holes in the rock, i just notice a small bit of rubble every now and then

Ok brilliant and can I just confirm, only one species to a tank?

There would be no reason to have more than one in your size tank Lewis.

In this instance, rock boring means that in their desire to eat coraline from the live rock they also tend to take some of the rock underneath and as Steve says, you can end up with little holes.

If you got tagged by one it would sure as hell will hurt  which leads me on to: antihistamins, you do have some in your medicine cupboard don't you and you have warned your nearest and dearest that if you have an allergic reaction to tell medical staff that you have a marine tank?

Also, after putting hands in tank, wash your hands straight away, don't touch your face in particular before hand

I just like sea urchins and think they look cool so that was my reason for asking if you could keep more than one. I haven't bought any urchins yet, just an info gathering exercise before I buy one. I was hoping to buy two a tuxedo type one and a long spined although ive gone off them a little.

I haven't warned my friends/family. I haven't got anything in there yet that could sting me, I Dnt think anyway. I'll let them no, although by the time i'd be found I'll prob be dead anyway! 

You can have more than one Lewis :good: if the tank is big enough and you hae enough food.

Bristle worms to name but one

i had a pincusion (similar to tuxedo i think) very funny to see as they often retrieve things out of rock piles and wear them as hats  and its always things youve lost like suction cups but if there on the glass and you put your hand touching there back they suck onto youre hand  dont do this near there mouth tho as i can imagine that would hurt

I've never seen any bristle worms, are they likely to be in there?? I told my mum nd dad today that if they Dnt hear from me in a week assume my tank killed me!!!  I'm going to have to get some gloves at this rate. I think I'll just get a blue tuxedo! Thanks for all you Guy's advice!
