Can someone who knows a lot about sea horses tell me how to set a tank for them. I need a tank to so tell me what size tank and what filter I need, I do not want a wet/dry filter.

Thanks

live vegatation, live food, no other fish. size of tank depends on seahorse. here is a website that will show you different types of sea horse and pipefish. very slow eaters

I am by no means an expert but I have kept three species for a while. Tank size depends on what you want - you don't just have to have a species only tank. If you want other species take this into account and think of their requirements before you decide on size. If you are only having seahorses do some research on the species on the net first. Our biggest seahorse tank is 260 litres and has loads of different stuff in it. If seahorses are your first marine fish I would suggest keeping only these for a while until you get to know them, get to know their habits before adding other stuff.

There is nothing special about any of our seahorse tanks - simple marine tanks with external canister filters on them (Fluvals, ehimes etc). Many people on this forum don't like them but they work for us.

Make sure your tank is fully cycled with lots of live rock and a corse sand bed. Ours seem to do well with live macro-algae to hang onto, it also provides shelter for lots of pods which they also like. There's loads of stuff on the net about it all. In the UK most seahorses are captive bred so are eating frozen food. It makes a big difference - if you get ones that are only eating live food it can be quite a challenge to wean them off it. I could harp on about it all but its best if you do research from different places first. I've attached some pics to give you an idea on tanks and what we find make suitable tank mates.

WOW!!!  i love that tank man. how much do those garden eels cost. how deep is that sandbed. :hey: unbelieveable!! rockin' 8)

edit: what do you mean there is nothing special about your seahorse tanks. theres the reason i started marine tanks.

some nice strange looking fish there!! and i think he means theres nothing special about the way he runs the seahorse tanks just plain and simple external!

Hya - Thanks for the comments :good: yeah - sorry I did mean there's just nothing special about the way i run them. Compared to most of the technical stuff on the market my marine tanks are as simple as they come, just good old canister filters and (simple) protien skimmers. as for the tanks themselves - well to me there's nowt more special than marine.

Oh and the garden eels cost about £30 and live in a 6" sand bed banked up at one end of the tank. Loads of text books state that they're not easy to keep in captivity but we've never had a days problem with ours - eat like pigs and spend the rest of the day grumping at everything else in the tank. Cheers

oh wow them baby seahorses are adorable
i was only looking at some today thinking one day when i get up & running properly i would like some.
