ok i am looking for some smaller size schooling fish. i want some neon tetras but hear they are prone to disease and not the best schoolers. what are some other COLORFUL school fish ?
thanks

My favourite colourful shoaling fish is harlequin rasbora, their colours can go really vivid and they're tight shoalers as well.

If you like neons but want hardier, you might want to look into cardinals. Looks pretty much the same but get slightly bigger. They are (in my experience) quite hardy. Rummynose tetras aren't too colourful, but the red heads definatly make them very noticeable.

They would be the 3 shoaling fish I'd think of first :)

Cardnals, neons, harlequins*my favorite*, skirt tetras, congo tetras

What kinda colors are you looking for?

Tetras are schoolers as are rasboras. I don't have any rasboras but I love the harlequins. Fish generally school as a defense mechanism (sp?) so in aquariums, if they are comfortable and don't sense danger, they will tend to not school as you would typically think of schooling (in a tight pack).

My angels are the same way. Usually, all 4 of them are together. They actually school a lot more than my tetras do. I wish I had a tank large enough to have 15 to 20 angels. They are indeed beautiful fish.

when angels group together they are hunting, not schooling.

By far the best schoolers are danios; take your pic of the 64 species available. every single one of them are great schoolers.

Well that makes sense. My angels eat like pigs. I guess they are hunting for more food.

I have always loved the tetras......black skirts are my personal favorite! I have two left out of 5 right now...they are the largest I have ever seen! They were all quite large when we got them, so I think they probably died from old age.

Serpae tetras are also really neat fish. With their red color, they add quite a splash and are always buzzing around the tank.

Tetras..neons, columbians, glowlight, diamond, cardinal, etc.
Harlequins are gorgeous - I love mine. They school perfectly and look stunning.
Danios are great at schooling too.

It is all really just a matter of choice.
