what is scalded lettuce?

i know scalding is burning, but why would you do that before feeding it to fish?

it is a term used to describe blanching/par boiling.
:hyper: either that or its had a very good telling off! lol

personally i would not do it, i don't see any reason too. but it may help it sink i guess.

thanks boboboy
that cleared it up. i tried to google it and i kept coming up with results where they pour hot oil over the lettuce and serve it with potatoes haha

It softens the cellulose in the lettuce and makes the leaves go floppy so that fish can eat it easily - it makes the texture of it resemble algae more so it's easier for them to eat it and to extract the nutrition from it.

If you just want it 'opened up' a bit, dip it in boiling water for two or three seconds. To really soften it (ie for specialist algae eaters or fry) pour boiling water over it and leave it sit until the water cools.

perfect description of blanching :good: though if you blanch/par boil, it actually reduces the nutrition the lettuce has. though it does help the fish get at the fibre.
