Hi everyone, my name is mark and i'm saying hello, i'm not sure if i'm doing this right, but if not i'm sure someone will tell me. I have a 55 gallon tank with 2 small oscars (4-5" long each) a pleco (5"), a loricaridae whiptail (6"), and 2 dwarf snakeheads. All the fish get on really well, plenty of hiding spots and never any trouble, but recently the channa have got cloudy eyes which i am trying to clear up with Melafix, so far (7 days) and no improvement, Melafix is a natural anti-bacterial, so am i using the right stuff? Or should i be using an anti-fungal treatment? My water parameters are thus: ammonia=0
nitrite =0
nitrate =less than 5mg per litre
ph =7-4
The water is changed 30% per week with re-mineralised R0, i live in England so my channa are legal, i would be distraught if my channa got ill, they show as much character as any oscar.

Please help.

Hello mate, welcome to the mad house, what type of channa are we talking about?
also how is the tank decorated? as channa will be that much better in a highly planted tank,all my tanks have this, i would not keep dwarf channa with oscars..channa sometimes get whats refered to as channa black eyes...where there eyes go cloudy from bumping it on something, but cloudy eye is also another possibility, do you have pics of this?
also knowing what type of channa you have will tell me wether or not you have sub tropical or fully tropical channa as ornatipinnis do not cope well with warm temps

Also just to add, the tank size is a fair bit on the small side considering you have two messy Os plus other tankmates

Wotcha Nelly, thanks for replying, you can see the tank on .....www.youtube.com/thewebmonkey9, it's quite well planted, the snakeheads are channa gachua.
thanks for getting back to me Davo, the 600litre is coming next year, the O's are still small.

filter is a fluval 405 running sponge , symec, and 4 baskets of bio media

That tank set up looks good but i would reccomend taking the oscars out of the picture, they will grow quick and i feel your gachua will become dinner once they grow....You could well be lucky but i would not risk it unless you went for the bigger varitey of channa then you would need a bigger tank, but at present all looks good, how long you had the gachua they seem happy enough, there is some varety of gachua some liking tropical temps, but also some from afganistan liking temps around 13c...seems you have the warmer variety.....what are your water changes like? channa do not like to many big waterchanges

Must say you have some nice setups with a few of my fav fish, (JD, Fire Eel, Horabagrus, Snowball pleco, channa) :good:

Yeah dude the O's and the channa chill nicely together, i hope it stays that way, big tank comin' soon. Water change is 30% RO per week, i think the channa gachua i have maybe the rainbow variety. I like your idea on dropping the amount of water change to maybe 20% for a couple of weeks and see what happens

Davo thanks the JD is a real nutter :good:

Wotcha Nelly, my dwarf snakeheads aren't channa gachua but channa bleheri, i think it's a warm water species.

Thanks Deathy. :good:
