They had them labeled as Gold Nugget Pleco's
I think they're L18's
Jet black body hundreds of tiny little gold spots very vivid contrast on the fish. yellow on the tip of two tails.

They wanted $20 for them. I wanted to buy one but they were in with the Neons and the neons were looking kinda sickly. Not to mention they had lots of dead fish in other tanks and a few even one tank with painted glass that had ick so back they could barely even swim.

So sad. Other tanks had pleco's chewing on the bodies of dead fish.
It was no lookin so good in those tanks today which is unusual for this store.

L18 is indeed the Gold Nugget plec ... they're absolutely lovely fish, mind you though, they get big (about 35cm or 14")

The price is reasonable, rather, it's more the average price they seem to go for. Nothing wrong with that :) Shame they were kept in bad conditions, though, it's very possible your lfs just got a new shipment in. Try going over again in about 3 days and see if it's any better. You might just get lucky :)

The info I could find on L18 shows max adult size of 6"

Gold nuggets don't do well in bad water, so if he's still alive in a week or 2 the chances are the water in your LFS is ok, I bought mine for £18 so thats about $33 ish I think, so you'll be getting a good deal.

Hmm thanks to that link I think I figured out what my other pleco is.
an L007

I don't think (hope?) that they get that big unless they're in the wild. I have been assured that mine won't grow much bigger than 7", but I have plenty of time to get a bigger tank if he looks like he'll be going beyond that.

Have an other look as has been suggested, as they are lovely fish. I didn't go to the shop looking for another plec, but when I saw these I couldn't leave without one. Mine cost £22, what ever that is in dollars.

I take it they are the same as the golden spotted plec.

I got one the other day, it is only a couple of inches if that and it was already £5.99

They guy at the lfs told me they dont grow much bigger than 8". I read today that can grow to 14" but that is in the wild, in captivity they will only grow to 8".

:dunno:

My housemate has a golden spotted plec. Funny thing with him was that he went almost entirely white on the journey home from the fish shop. He's fine now though! Think it cost £10, and is about 2".

Doesn't seem to have the same amount of character as a common plec, and is much more timid.

I understand you're looking at about 7" max over a good few years on one of these.

ps. I'd not a tin of tuna from a place that keeps its fish as you described.

If the tanks are that bad i suggest you make a stand by not buying from them at all. Infact I think you should make some suggestions to the management, or if you have the time volunteer for a parttime positition to help them sort out the state of their tanks.

If they don't care about their fish you should show them how to!

If you do plan to buy something from them then make sure you quarentine it first!

Ben
