I checked out a lfs today - heard they were hiring and went in to get an application. While I was there, I figured I may as well look around. They have a big tank that has a Red-Tailed Catfish (probably about 2 feet long) and two big Oscars. Kevin (husband) and I stood there and watched 'em for a long time (we were waiting for the owner/manager to arrive so I could talk to him). It was so neat! The way he used his barbels...every time he felt a feeder fish with a barbel, he'd gulp it down (or try, he didn't always get it). Sometimes when he'd go by the edge of the tank, he flick one of his barbels out and it would come out and over the side of the tank   It was quite cool, though.

The lfs looked *okay*. It's fairly new and I don't think they have many (any?) fish-smart people working there. Some of their tanks had horrible algae blooms (water so green you couldn't see anything in it). A number of dead fish, too. They had a Mango Pleco - he was very cute :)

If I get hired there, I hope I'd get to make (and implement) suggestions! I'd do away with all that funky-colored gravel and get natural-colored gravel in there. I'd put live plants in most of the tanks. I forget what else.

I thought of you, CFC, when I saw the catfish!

Good luck, hope you can help them grow into a great store! :)

I got the job :) Worked my first day yesterday and had a good time. They already direct fish questions to me (at least when the owner's not there)! I know a heck of a lot less about fish than I thought I did  Actually, I think it's just that I know about relatively few species, mostly the common tropical freshwater, and almost nothing about ponds or saltwater. I've been doing some reading though, and learning as I go, of course.

The owner does know a lot about fish, from what I can tell. He wants his stores to be known as "fish stores". This store is relatively new. My boss is willing to hear any and all suggestions I have for the fish department, which is cool. I've got a list for him :) If any of you in the Twin Cities area of Minnesota that are interested in visiting one of the stores (there are two), PM me and I'll give you the name and addresses of the place.

Oooh, and we can pet the big catfish :p

Congrats on the job! If I lived near minnesota, I'd visit you. Good luck on turning this store into fish paradise. Moe LFS's need to be run by people here.
