So for my future tank im thinking of getting pea size gravel and today i was thinking about sand but i have a doubt with it because when i set up my current tank i have i put sand in there and there was a cloudy look which i think went away after a few days but there was that sandy tint in the water which didnt make the water clear and clean so the tank i want later has carbon in there so will this help.

Did you wash the sand properly before you put it in? It needs a very good wash, hard work I know  I put sand in two tanks so far and the clowdiness was gone in a few hours, water is crystal clear. Also, if you are using very fine sand that can happen for a longer period but it should settle eventually.

Thanks well if i do get my future tank i am thinking more of using sand now because i was thinking of getting pea size gravel but my local pets@home dont have it and i do agree on cleaning it proply like when i was cleaning the sand i got it took about 8 washes and we gave up and put it in but yeah sand is looking to be better now and i hope i dont have to change sand to gravel again which took 4 hours :D

Just a recommendation but if you do go for sand don't get play sand and spend that bit extra on actual aquarium sand. Trust me it's worth it :)

I did the same and no sand flying around. It's not that expensive either.

I'm just curious; why do you say that?

Many people here, including myself, use play sand without problems.

I ordered pea gravel from Surrey pets (to replace my sand as I didn't like it for a large tank) and I had to rinse it nearly as much as sand... but still prefer gravel.

+1 with Fluttermoth on the curiosity, I've used it many times and absolutely love it. Never had any problems, and it didn't take ages to wash out. Only bad side is that fish poo is much more visible on it! :p
