Sorry I'm asking all these questions, there's just so much to learn before I even touch my tank!

Can I use play sand as a substrate in a soft water tank? The research seems to be conflicting.

Most people here have said yes. I used sand from my LFS, more expensive but I felt I would have a claim if it turned out harmful; it is very white though.

I have play sand in most of my tanks, have done for a couple of years now without any problems. Just wash it really, really well, getting rid of all the lighter particles, before you use it, or it will cloud your tank for days!

+1 on the sand, but make sure it is clean - depending on how much you put in, you could be looking at a few hours of cleaning

I've tried gravel, premium aquarium sand from LPS, and pool filter sand, and I have to say that I LOVE pool filter sand. It's much easier to clean than the premium aquarium sand, which is VERY fine, like beach sand, and it looks much nicer than gravel. My cories like it too. Plus, it's much cheaper. :good:
