I've got a 29 gallon tank that's has been running for a few years. I've dabbled in plants before, but I'm now finally going all out into it.

I was wondering if anyone could give me some insight on using "Aragonite CaribSea" sand for a small portion (the font, maybe a valley) of the bedding in the tank. It is left over from my reef tank.

Would it be safe to use?

I'm planning on soaking it in freshwater to remove any salts.

Check on the bag and see what it contains :) if its not got anything alive in it and wont alter your Ph, should be ok.

Thanks for the reply. It doesn't contain anything alive, and is supposed to be free of all organic material. However, it says on the bag, it contains Calcium (381,000 ppm) Carbonate Buffer Co3 (590,000 ppm) Strontium (7,390 ppm) Magnesium (1,050 ppm) Potassium (56 ppm).

It also helps maintain a pH of 8.2.

Keep in mind I'm just using a small portion of it too..

Still ok?

Yeah, hard water loving plants will enjoy that. I can imagine Vallis sky rocketing. So long as it is stable I see no problems at all. A lot of fish and plants can with stand a large range of pHs so long as it's constant and there are no large swings in short amounts of time :)

using aragonite will raise the ph significantly
the only type of freshwater fish set up it is ok for is
african rift lake cichlids (malawis, victorian & tanganikan)
