Sand V`s Gravel

Hi Im thinking of going over to sand, at the moment i have Black gravel but not enougth only about 3/4 of an inch, would it be posible to add black sand over the top? Plus would i be able to do this with the plants and fish in it. Thanks Ivor

not trying to put a downer on these threads but personally i am sick of seeing them theres at least one a week they really get boring after youve ansered 10 of them

You're not required to reply to people's threads. That's why it's in the beginner questions. A lot of times people don't view the faqs or pinned topics but that's why they come to a forum to get people's opinions. I'm kinda sick of people saying they're sick of overasked questions. Everyone has had these questions at somepoint. Yes, even you smurfy. And I'm sure that whoever you asked had heard your question 50 million times. But they still wanted to help so they gave an answer. Simple, if you don't want to respond to the millionth sand v. gravel thread then don't even click on it.

Oh and go with sand. Your bottom-dwellers will thank you. I use playsand in both my tanks. Got it at a home-depot/ lowes type of building place. I think it was like $3.50 looks great. If you want to plant in it. Put a layer of laterite underneath it. :D

Sorry i did read the sand thread in the Faq section but i simply wanted to know what would have been best for the fish i wanted, and i do apriciate the responce.

Do we know of any good sources of silica sand?

get out side with a hose pipe and a bucket stick some sand in a bucket and constantly run water into the bucket as you sirt the sand. it will remove the smaller particles of sand that will float up in your tank as they will just wash over the side ...

i like loaches and have heard that sand is not good for loaches due to swallowing the sand when searching for food.

I changed to sand 2 weeks ago and my cories prefer it over the gravel I had before. The sand is much cleaner as anything just sits on top so I just siphon it away, when I removed my gravel even though I cleaned it weekly it was really dirty underneath where old food and fish poop had sunk down. I also think the sand looks alot nicer and if you buy playsand it is much cheaper than gravel. I hope this helps you.

What is playsand?

Playsand is what you would use for a childrens sand pit, you can buy it from Argos for £2.49 for a 15kg bag. You just have to make sure the play sand you buy is non toxic.

Isn't it better to keep hopsital tanks clear-bottomed? I'm sure thats what I got told, but i'm not sure. You probably know more than me, and it might not matter.
