Sand Question

as a rough guide how much tank floor space would a 20lb bag of sand cover? and at what thickness?

I'm afraid i have no perception of wieght/space/distance ect. sorry

and also what is the best depth to have sand at?

Quite a large area if your just spreading it everywhere outside in the wind
It's impossible to say how far it would go without knowing tank dimensions, depth you wish to go.

Substrate should be 'banked' from shallow to deep at the back to creat an illusion of depth to the tank.

Usually it is recomended to have a depth of 2.5 Inches at the front to 3.5 Inches at the back, this is however if you intend to plant the tank and need space for root growth and anchoring the plants down.

However if you do not wish to plant the tank then it is really up to you how deep you want the bed and in what style.

I used 30 lbs of sand to cover 450 sq inches at an average depth of about 1.75 inches. So you might say each lb of sand is roughly 26 cubic inches.

20 lbs of sand should be about 520 cubic inches. If you divide that number by the length of your tank and then the width, it will tell you about how deep the 20 lbs of sand will be in your tank.

i supose it would go a long way if i did that

well my tank is 40X12 inches and planted (or will be) so i'll go with your sugesion of 3.5 at teh back to 2.5 at the front
..so that would be 480 square inches and then average 3 inches depth thats 1440 cubic inches so I'm guessing i need mroe than one bag? I'm sorry- like i said i really have no perseption of how big 20lb is and i can only guess that 1440 cubic inches is a fair bit

22.5*1.6 = 36Kg or 79.2lb in Roman Catholic.
