cna u get sand from the beach or do need to get some from ur lfs

Don't use from the beach. You have no idea what kind of chemicals could be in there. Your best bet is getting sand from you lfs, play sand from a hardware store, or pool filter sand from a swimming pool store. I use pool filter sand and love it.

In addition to the dangers CC mentioned, beach sand will often containg calcareous material, shell fragments and the like. This will raise your hardness and pH. A pure silica sand is chemically neutral - much better. Pool filter sand is what I use. It has a more regular grain size and shape then silver sand or play sand, thus does not pack down to the same extent.
