People get wood, and rocks from rivers, and soak so that they can use in the tanks. Can you do the same with river sand, or beach sand?

Technically speaking, it'll illegal to take sand, rocks etc from beaches or woods.
Having said that, I wouldn't use sand from a beach as it's made from shells & stuff & could alter your Ph, & also, you don't know what nasties it could have in it.

IMO I wouldn't do it because sand from lakes and rivers are like ground up rocks, and some rocks arent safe for aquariums. So you never know what rocks could be in their. And I wouldn't use beah sand in a freshwater tank because I t is just ground up coral

You shouldn't be getting any of those things from water bodies. Your gonna be bringing so many random organism into your tank that most people would rather not have. Also the risk of parasites if the waterbody has fish in it. Its much safer to just get those objects where they are not in contact with water. I use wood rocks and sand I have collected from the woods, I wouldn't bother with anything from a water body. I don't boil or bake any of the things I collect though, so its up to you in the end where you get it from.

taking stuff might be illegal in the UK, but in the US it isn't unless its public or posted private property.

I did this in an old shrimp tank...rinsed it well, boiled it...it still managed to kill every shrimp in my tank. I wouldn't be doing it again.
