Right, tank is nearly cycled and just come across a worrying thread somewhere else.
I used Tetra plant fertiliser underneath my sand, on one rear corner of my tank, it's probably 2 inches high, I've then capped that with probably another 2-3inches of sand. The rest of the aquarium probably has about 2 inches of sand with nothing underneath.
I wanted to create a 'ledge' on the floor of the aquarium.
The idea was inspired by a friend on Facebook posting up some pictures on her holiday from a place 'where the rainforest met the sea'..
So I've got a bank of probably 5 inches of substrate at the back, grading down to about 2 inches at the front, I've now read about sand creating pockets of harmful gas from processing nitrates, that if released, can kill fish.
As much as I love the theme I'm going along, I don't want any potential devastating events to happen down the line and wipe my future stocking.
My question, do I take out a fair amount of sand, and just use an inch layer over what I've got and drastically reduce the effect I've set my whole tank up over, or will I be ok? Due to my Redmoor wood, it's VERY difficult to 'rake' the sand and reduce the air pockets.
Tank is planted, will house Blue Rams, Corys and Black phantom tetra, as you can see, the left side will be pretty heavily planted (the rainforest), the right side will remain quite open (the sea)..
It's hard to tell in the picture how deep the sand is in that back corner, but it's really quite deep...
