Always wanted this fish since i seen it on the internet along time ago
and my LFS has just got them in, SELL EVERYTHING TO MAKE ROOM FOR A TANK TIME!

What would you guys recommend the minimum sized tank for a breeding pair of salvini would be?
^ Just them in the tank!

I'd like them in with some tank mates but i'll figure this part out depending on the question above lol.

minimum of 50g i would say , if you can go bigger then do :)

Yeah. THat's about right

Basically as big as you can manage (obviously!) but if you want to breed them and keep other fish provide a cave right at one end of the tank so that they can defend that whilst still giving other fish room at the other end. Although I think that the aggression of this fish is often overstated it can be a little territorial when breeding. I suspect that many accounts of aggression will be from people who normally keep platies but saw this lovely cute yellow fish and decided to buy it- only to see it rapidly triple in size their platies have their ars* handed to them! I'd say it was pretty standard aggression wise for a mid-sized cichlid.

Lol yeah, might sound irish but i needed the minimum size to work out how big i can go with a tank size.
I'd prefer a breeding pair as it's interesting to watch them but if they dont, it's all cool either way i'd deffo layout the tank for them to have there own space (if i manage to get a tank big enough to keep them with other fish).

I've got some green terrors in another tank so the aggression of a salvini shouldn't be a problem, glad they're pretty standard tbh..
Can imagin what you said about people who see the cute yellow fish though lol.

I know people that are shocked by the aggression of tiger barbs! I don't know where you are based but I have two 5" spare male Wild caught Salvinis as my female has chosen my bigger male as a mate. I'm in no hurry as it is a bu**er to catch fish out of my tank but I am moving it soon so if you are still after some then let me know- or I have loads of fry if you fancy growing them on!

If you have any fry at the time i would be interested :good: .

I have some terrible pics that I will post below but I need to get some more to do them justice! As luck would have it my dad goes to Carlisle once a week and sometimes I tag along or go in his place. I live in Derby so that is quite a fluke! The pics are of the breeding pair but the spare males are the same quality but an inch shorter (about 5-6")

Lol, the odds of that - not many people have even heard of carlisle never mind come here too  !
Them salvini are wicked mate, what else is in the tank with them and what size tank if u dont mind me asking?
Need to give myself a rough idea :D

Mine are in a pretty big tank (6'7" x 2.5' x 26" (d)) hence not wanting to catch them out! In with them are a royal knife, a distichodus sexfasciatus, loads of convicts (all bloody breeding again!), green terrors, jack dempsey, talking catfish, blue acara, 3 types of geophagus, uaru, giraffe cat, a pair of blue dolphins and the 2 spare male Salvinis. oh yeah, and a fly river turtle!

Wicked, something i've always wanted but room is always a issue :( lol.
Do the salvini n GT bother each other?

Eventually i'll have to move 1 of my females and was thinking about putting her
in with the salvinis if i can get a tank big enough ofc.

No problems at all, I only have 1 female GT though so I don't know how it would be if there was a pair. The only aggression the Salvs show is chasing fish out of their territory which is about 2 foot square. Other than that the only signs of aggression in the tank are between my big male Geo brasilensis and the GT but that is just posturing and gill flaring, it never comes to anything.

Sweet.

I've got 2 female and 1 male GT breeding in another tank, had females lay next to each other few times too - pretty wierd.
Eventually i think i'll deffo have to move 1 of the females though and hopefully i'd be able to keep her in with pair of salvini.
