Hi, I orginally wanted a tank of piranha until I discoverd that they were illegal in the US. Provided that that was the only reason I was sticking to freshwater fish, I have decided to go saltwater. All I need now is the saltwater equivalent to a Piranha... any ideas?

Lionfish, Leaf fish and Frogfish are all I can think of ATM which are suitable for any decent home aquarium. :D

How about the saltwater equiv of an oscar? I'm setting up a 100 gal tank.. If I only have one fish in there its OK.. But I want one with a lot of personality

They aren't illegal in the usa.. They're legal in almost all the states..

A trigger fish would probably do well.

The equivalent of an Oscar is a Grouper which is a  in an aquarium IMO

Dwarf Angels have very individual personalities

I'll also add that its not hard to have piranhas in states that dont allow them.. I have them and dont live in a 'legal' state.. Theres just idiots who decide Ps arent for them and let them go in the wild.. thats what the laws are for.. dont be an idiot..

If you do decide to get some, here are some tips:

When buying feeders ALWAYS wear a trench coat and whistle...
If someone asks what you are feeding tell them they are cheaper than sardines <wink><wink>

You are probably within a day trip of driving to a state that will sell them to you.. I think thats better than mail ordering them.. I am not sure how many years in the big house you'll get if caught, but I'd be willing to guess its somewhere between downloading an mp3 and getting caught with booze when youre 20...

just try a diff salt

Odd, wonder what state you live in... I see them at just about every LFS around where I live in NY.

If you want a saltwater equivalent of an Oscar, I'd have to say larger triggerfish would be the way to go. Tings are fast swimming eating machines

Marine Piranha= Barracuda. (definately not for the home aquarium im afraid.

Oscar= Most groupers and almost all of these will far outgrow a 100 gallon tank :(

Lionfish and frogfish are ambush and entrapment predators, however they dont possess huge personalities (IMO) when compared to more active swimming fish.

You would probably be better off with a small moray eel if you want a predator type fish. A trigger or puffer would also make good candidates but please research each species as they can also outgrow 100 gallons with ease.

My Dwarf lion has more personality than my Clown fish. :)

We are each individuals and im glad you feel that way but I am afraid i cannot agree. Clowns are not my favorite fish but they have enormous characters and each and every one of htem has their own individual perculiar quirks.

This subject however could lead us around forever and would never be truely agreed upon, what lights the fire of one hobbiest is a damp squid (excuse the pun) to another. Whatever floats your boat really is the true answer of what you look for in a fishes character.
