i just now read the article but i have a few question and this may turn out to be an emergency but...short version-i noticed my roosvelti have been scratching so i add about 8 tblsp of aquarium salt to my 90g(very slow drip)as "medication" but even before this i usually add some salt once or twice a month(not much-about half the recommended dose)anyway,i just got about 10 C.Julii and they're in this 90g i'm adding salt to :X what should i do?

I am not sure what the question is referring to. I say keep an eye on them for any different behavior. My clown loaches stratch on the driftwood sometimes. They are healthy, eating, swimming and playing like normal. I think sometimes they just have an itch. If it gets excessive, i would put the one that is scratching in a quarantine tank and keep an eye there.

As for the salt, try do a WC everyday about 20-25% after a few days it should be back down and fine. Truthfully i have read about no salt in with clown loaches but I add a little bit of salt to my tank and haven't had any problems.

Opinions vary on the regular use of salt in freshwater aquaria.
We do add about 1 tablespoon per 10 US gallon. This is quite a low amount and many people add even more than this with no problems.
We do keep Pleco's (We have three Clown Plecos and a Bristlenose Pleco) along with 2 Brochis Britskii and 2 Synodontis Schoutedeni and have no problems using a low amount of salt.
Here are a couple of links with info.
Rock Salt - Magic Solution?
Salt in a Freshwater Tank?

I use 1 tbsp salt per 10 US gallonn in all 2 of my tanks and have cory's and other catfish in both nad have never had a problem. my other 2 tanks have snails in them so they get no salt.

when doing a water change, I do 5 gallons at a time and I add 1 tsp to the 5 gallon bucket before adding to the tank. all of my fish in the salted tanks are very healthy and never had a problem with skin burns or the like on scaleless fish

I am not sure what the question is referring to

Regarding the use of salt with these types of fish. They are fresh water and not salt or brackish. Cory's especially will not tolerate salt in the tank. So under no circumstances add salt to a tank with them in. Same as plecs ( corys) they come form the amazon basin, Rio rivers, they are all fed form fresh water form other lakes, streams, etc. The use of salt is not recommended or needed. Even for illness treatment, If you need to add dalt to a tank for treating fish take the infected fish out of tank and then use salt in a hospital tank.

The outcome of using salt with plec's and cory's will be lots of dead ones

i always have salt in my tank and this is the first time i've heard that plecos and catfish like it,i've heard it about loaches and black ghost knives but never cory cats and plecos.anyway i did a 30% WC and i'll do another tonight just in case(JIC).

mos,

it's not that I said they like it, mine just seem to be fine with it. I began salting after my massive ich breakout and have no problems since. I only use half of what it say on the carton though.

cory's are freashwater and not salt water fish! do not use salt in tanks with corys! or other scaleless fish!

I am well aware that they are freshwater. I use freshwater aquarium salt and in vey small doses mind you. even my scaleless fishes seem fine with it. This is a very debatable topic. the lfs I buy all my fish from uses 1 tsp salt per 5 gallons except in the snail tank. and I have never seen a sick fish at this particular store, moreover no fish I have purchased from them has ever had an illness. maybe i'm just lucky, but salt in small doses should be fine.

cry, I'm not trying to be argumentitive with you m8, just voicing my opinion. I have had good luck, others may not have. generally I would agree with you on the salt vs. scaleless fish, but since lightly salting any tanks that do not have snails I have not had any of the illness problems I was experiencing. SORRY if I have offended you, not my intentention as you have helped me lots in the past.

cheers and

don't know why i bother! most people who keep corys and other scaleless fish dont use salt in tanks most sites and cory book advise people not to use them! so u all have good luck with salt, fine , dont come running to me when u dont! i honestly dont know why sometimes when we give advice over and over again! and no ones listens or reads and then moans later! its the same question all over again! salt!

In my opinion you should never, salt a tank with corys !

sorry if i hurt anyone feelings! if did i apologize!

i know some of you use it and thats your choice! me i dont and would never adivse it!

tanked you not offended me! sorry mate but this question pops up time and time again, and i really get annoyed when slat is mentioned in same topic as corys!

sorry peeps!

no intention to hurt anyone here!

tanked-i think that was towards me but either way what the heck is up w/all the AT-TIT-UDE.that responce wasn't ah!! nevermind place ain't worth it see ya!! 8)

Hmmm i didn't see any attitude.

At any rate, I'm with tanked. I put minescule(sp?) traces of salt in my tanks. Since I have started doing this, about 2 years now, I have NEVER experienced an ich breakout or other parasites. Before adding salt I did have occasional disease bouts. I may experiment with my other 10 gal i'm setting up this weekend and not add salt and see how it turns out.

This is just my experience and in no way is meant to persuade people who don't use salt to start using it.

i wonder if you even read my entire post seems like you didn't get passed the subject.

cryaosi-annoying as it may be to see this topic come up over and over again, someone is still asking for advice either get over it and give it or step aside and let someone w/some patience do your little job.

impur-maybe not so much attitude(bad choice of words) but i know cyosi can give a little more effort than that, all i wanted to do was clear up my salt issue coz i've never seen the artyicle and have NEVER heard of this until now

I was going to stay well clear of this topic as i think i have been in involved in one argument too many already this month but since my opion has been asked i will give it.

I personally do not add salt to any of my tanks, not even as a medication.Although i have no proof to back it up i have always been told and believed that salt should not be added to ANY tank containing ANY Amazonian species of fish including armoured and scaleless catfish, the Amazon its self has no or very little salt content in the water and i believe it is the fish keepers responcability to replicate these conditions to the best of his/her abilities.Salt IMO should only be used in brackish or marine tanks.
