I noticed my sailfin has a lump on its underbody. he also has patchy skin.

The lump is lumpy and gets sand stuck to it.. Water stats are all fine and he is eating fine and is quite active. he is a digger. is it maybe he caught it or should i be medicating???

What kind of size is it? Just trying to guage the size of the lump, which is difficult to do without visual references. Size can help rule out possibilities, and make others more likely. Could you try to get a close up of the lump, without using the flash, as this will also help wit diagnostics.

That is a good looking plec :good: Loe his dorsal BTW

All the best

He is 15cm and i will get another pic when he is against the glass.(He is very active so he is not there long!!) i took the only moment i had and needed the light for it to show up.

ps. his dorsal is Huge. It lives up to his name!!!

Without a clear picture, it's hard to tell exactly, but off the top of my head it could be;

Tumour (untreatable)
Bacterial based swelling(sometimes resistant to treatment)
Though unlikely, just a knock that will self heal.
There are probibly more, but it's late and I've almost finished thinking properly....

Just some ideas to the thread, while we await that photo.

I have heard of treatment of tumours, but this is obviously not failproof and you only do it if you're desperate. Fortunately I've never had to. But apparently it's possible to literally cut growths off fish (clove oiled at the time) and cauterise the scar. I don't think that the method they use with humans (high temperature) would be a good idea. Salt might work.

Getting more concerned. Im no closer to diagnosing and now i notice there is some disfigument/crusty edging to the stickup bit on his nose( I don't know the name of it.... )

the lump is made up of mini lumps. almost like bubbles.

thoughts please. Thanks

Is the fish flicking and rubbing as bubbles on fish can be a sign of parasites.

Hate to say it, but it looks to me like a tumor

I know of no treatments, though someone above says they do, that can be used for this. They are usualy fatal, but still allow the fish often a few years before they start to show any signs of suffering.

You could try cutting the tumor off, but they have their own blood supplies, and the fish may bleed to death. Also, this can ba a grusome procedure that many aren't happy performing.

That said I've never seen a tumor that has multiple bumps before. Mebe this is a parasite? It is rather unusual whatever it is :sly:

Sorry I can't say for definate

Lumps that look like a cluster of eggs or caulilflower can be lymphocystis.

This is looking the best fit. Once i can catch him he will be isolated... its not easy to catch a fish in a 5ft tank!!!

Should i add any treatment to the hospital tank? and my hospital tank is small will this be an issue while he is recopperating/waiting it out?

Thanks

If it is lympthocysitis there nothing to be due as its a virus.
Would be better off moving all the other fish out of the tank but this can't always be done.
I would issolate the sick fish as if the lumps burst they infect the tanks.
Look under lympthocystis
