I'm just starting to practise the EI method of dosing (Thanks zig) and was wondering if there are any safety precautions that I should take with regards to mixing and storing chemicals. I just made my first batch of potassium nitrate and I'm a little nervous when it comes to chemicals. I'm using a water bottle right now. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Yup, store the powdered chemicals in a cool dry place... kno3 is a ingredient for explosives i think :) but im not sure if it is explosive in pure kno3 state..

also when mixing i think its best to use RO in a clean bottle.

I used distilled water when mixing. Does it make a difference? Also, how long can I keep it mixed in a bottle?

that i do not know, i guess distilled would be fine... i think its a good practice to just brew a mix that would last for only around a month ? or less ? dunno... thats just me

and just do the obvious....label your bottles clearly and keep out of reach from children.

I have to be really careful with a 1 year old running around getting into everything. I did label the bottle. Thanks for the tips, especially the one about not eating it, pseud. :D

One (probably obvious, but you'd be surprised) bit of advice:

Don't place or hold the fert storage container above the water or on the hood. Accidents happen and you don't want your nitrates to suddenly hit 500ppm due to a spill. Always prepare the necessary dose away from the tank and bring it to the water.

Good point. I'm going to lock mine up just to be safe.

Dont mix kno3 with sugar, compact in a copper tube with a small hole drilled in and peen over both ends, add a wick and light  :X

hmmmm, i'll be pulling my boiler apart later on tonight then. cheers RYO i always wondered how to blow my head off.

google doesn't seem to be too helpfull on that point.... probably a good thing though LOL.
