Safe Plants?

ok, so i need to get some plants to go in one of my tanks.

there are shrimps in that tank (and i've had shrimp - half a tanks worth of - poisoned by stuff from plants) and i need to know that any plants i put in there are safe. so, is there any way to know if plants have toxic chemicals on them?

If not, how do you make plants safe for use with inverts?

would putting them in a bucket with a filter running with carbon do the trick?

I've read that soaking them for 24 hours in tap water does the job.

I rinse, soak, then rinse again.

hmmm. the thing is, they need to be 100% free of chemicals - the fish will be fine, but the shrimp won't - the fish are tolerant of chemicals like copper andfertilisers, but shrimp aren't - i've had shrimp poisoned by chemicals from plants before - lots of them died and i'm still trying to replace them.

I need to be 100% sure they're chemical free.

yeah, but they're kinda hard to find on ebay! lol.

so, will putting them in a bucket filtered with activated carbon do the trick and remove any meds / snail killers etc. make them safe to put in with shrimp?

I don't think so. Some fertilizers have copper, which kills shrimp.

If you have ever used a copper-based chemical in the tank you plan to put shrimp in you may be unable to keep most invertebrates. I suggest adding some ghost shrimp if you have used copper, and if they die the tank is unsuitable for shrimp. You may be able to make the tank safe for shrimp again by adding copper removing media to your filter or changing substrates.

most ferts do contain copper...but not enough to kill shrimp

You could try a very weak bleach solution dip. 1 part bleach to 10 parts water. Then give them a good rinse.

most ferts do contain copper...but not enough to kill shrimp

Im backing this up, for example TPN+ you can double, triple or even quadruple dose it and it wont affect the shrimp, claimed by tropica and its been proven in my tank.
