Are there a certain type of mussels that are safe for Green Spotted Puffers to eat? Ive never fed my Puffer Mussels before but want to...He is only about 2" right now, so I assume they would have to be quite small for him to eat...

Brackman,

I feed my 3" GSP Gamma Frozen Whole Mussels. Typically I have some trouble tracking them down, you may have to order them. These aren't in a shell though if that's what you're looking for. If you want shelled food I'd suggest getting H20 Life "Clams-on-a-half-shell". They're small and the puffer will have to pick the meat off of the shell which should help wear down it's beak. When your GSP reaches maturity you can try out Gamma Frozen Whole Shelled Cockle.

The mussel meat is very soft so you can easily pull it apart to the proper size.

Like Dave says, finding frozen mussels can be a challenge. If you cant find them frozen in a LFS or internet order, try your supermarket for fresh or frozen. Make sure you read the ingredients label before using frozen mussels in your supermarket.

Look for all natural or organic, its your safest bet. Anything other than mussels is not what you want.

Also avoid using green lipped mussels, i cant prove it but im sure these made my fish sick (as in vomit) after eating them which played havock with the water chemistry.

Interesting, I never heard of a fish vomiting. Your nitrates must have been pretty high

I wish it was just nitrates, i speant new years eve and new years day doing nearly continuous water changes in an attempt to keep the ammonia and nitrites at safe levels, when several fish that average at 10-18 inches vomit their entire stomach contents into your tank the result is not pretty, and i had this happen in 3 tanks all at the same time :X

what is the best way to prepare said frozen mussels? I picked up some whole ones from the local shopping center, they look a little large, but they are all mussel. It wants you to prepare them by the bag, but do you just boil one and throw it in, or nuke one and throw it in? whats the best way to prepare it.

You do not have to prepare them, just lem them defrost and brake off some small pieces and feed it to your fish. Treat it the same way you would any other frozen fish food.

so dont throw the whole thing in? break it into peices somehow?
If your fish are large enough to eat a whole mussel than dont brake into pieces. If you have smaller fish brake it into pieces.
