:s Please Help!

As a parent myself I can see two differnet points here.

First be totally up front with what you want to do. Back doors will only work for a very limited time frame and you will lose trust for anything you might want to do in the future.

I would suggest doing some research, find out how much the devices attached to your tank draw in electricity, with the heater you might need to take say 3 readings morning afternoon and evening (for an hour) to show how long it is on for and then calculate the average hours per day it will be on for.

Take these values and then find out the cost of electricity in your house, present the facts, my tank costs £2.24 per week to run (for example) and I am willing to clean the car fortnightly to cover it. Cleaning the car won't seem so bad when you go back in and look at your fry!

They will hopefully appreciate the effort and realise you are keen on what you are doing, as mentioned earlier explain the learning in your hobby, are you just keeping the fry or trying to breed the best ones, therefore getting a basic understanding of genetics, without knowing your age maybe you could ask a science teacher at school if they have anything that could help your understanding of breeding.

If you have access to powerpoint or the open Office equivalent put a presentation together, a good learning skill and it has won discussions for my kids when they propose it almost like a business proposal.

And I understand your problem, I could think of a couple of uses for some more tanks but I am banned, (the wife) from getting any more, though I hope to work on that one also!

Good Luck

Thanks statman that sounds like a really good plan :). Im 16 and in my frist year of alevels, and im hoping to look at the genetic variants (not on this batch though as the females were already pregnant) of the guppies that i breed, and i hope to selectivley cross them and see what strains i get as i have a some nice males to use as my fathers (1 metalic blue, 1 metalic white and rainbow dotted, 1 metallic purple, and a tuxedo guppy with an interesting tail). I may ask at school as i know they have a tank that isnt in use, maybe i could hijack a corner of the animal house XD, failing that i may see if my parents will let me put a fry tank in the garage.

if its the electric theyre bothered about putting it in the garage will put a dent in the electric bill

glad my mum understands, well it was her who brought the 1st tank now i have 9 or so, although i do now pay board (but not much)

as for your fry, if you have plenty of dense plants and floating plants you should get a few fry survive

ARGH!! A friend of the family told my mum there was no need for the fry tank and that the fry would all survive in the big tank, so guess what, mum is ordering the immediate shut down of the tank! NOO, they arent big enough yet :( oh well i lost this one well and truley

Why not point your mother to this thread. The first thing we did when we started to get fry was to invest in bithing traps etc, totally inefficent and the fry could creep through the slats. Once we decided that we wanted to let a larger number mature to evaluate we invested in a fry tank, its a 54L split 1/3 birthing area, 2/3 growing area. It contains about 40 guppie juve's 6 - 10 weeks and 10 platties of siimilar age.

These fish are so much happier in a seperate tank and it allows you to adopt a different feeding regime.

Intend to keep one or two and off load the remainder.

Where are you based?

There is no point in me directing my mum to this thread - she has no care for fish, infact she hates them. Its a shame i know but the hard truth is she wont listen or care, so much so that all the fry are now in the main tank (hiding in the anubias i might add) and im just hoping they can avoid the rams until the frogbit arrives from pippoodle.
I'm in albrighton, a village just oustide of wolverhampton, not far from where minxfishy lives, i believe he is WV5 and i am WV7

i know how you feel, i have a mum that doesn't understand, i dont mean to be rude but if i were you id be happy with what youve got, you have to obey and appreciate why your mum sets boundaries, and if you want more fish ask her if you can have a pond at the bottom of the garden where it is obscured

Oh i am happy with the fact im allowed to keep the one ive got. She said im not allowed a pond because its a danger, and we have a vegatable plot at the end of the garden, i might see if the people nextdoor would like the coldwater fish, failing that i will talk to the science technitians at school who have a massive animal house with empty tanks :/

Sorry, to hear about that. Silly mums friend. IMHO i hate it when someone out of the household who may or may not have knowledge of your tank or even fish care give advice. Freaking know it alls. But i dont know this person so im not commenting directly about them.

This thread has made me very thankful of my parents and their acceptance of my hobbies. I currently have 6 tanks in all over 130G. I know its not alot but for my basement it sure seems like it. And for my other hobbies (Airsoft) they are against any violence and refuse to come to games but let me store my gun and gear is the house.

Too bad you were not local as i would gladly house your fry, would be really cool to see and learn the genetics strains. I always wanted to try doing something similar.

Good luck and keep to it :good:

Lol yeh canada is just alittle bit too far lol - i've got frogbit coming soon hopefully so that should be good and as it happens the rams are actually ignoring the majority of the fry so thats good :)
