I don't know if I should euthanize Alphie, my male Betta. I don't want to. He has had several weeks of compounding problems. He shares his tank with two Tetras. Around Christmas I attempted to introduce a Plecostomus . The Plecostomus attacked Alphie and left him with only one half of a pectoral fin. The fin has shown some regeneration. A couple of weeks ago he started floating on his side at top of tank but was still eating. Last week he was curling his body into an "S" form and was showing a sore on one of his gill flaps. Following advice from forums on this site I administered diluted doses of Melafix. For the past three days he barely seems to be hanging on. Mostly he's lying just how he's fallen at the bottom of the tank. I have stopped the Melafix doses (unsure as to whether or not I was exacerbating his condition) Until a couple of days ago I was changing the water in the 10 ga. tank at about 25% ever day. The last water change seemed to cause him a great deal of stress so I have not continued. I don't have a water diagnostic. I'm a Newbie-thing-a-ma-bob. Alfie is my first fish.

Please advise. Thank you.

No. My LFS sergeant lady tells me "just keep changing the water". Anything further, no idea.

Suggest please.

i'd get an API master test kit, but i wouldnt know what i would say without test results though. sorry.

ps: never trust the LFS.

can you not seperate your betta and see if he recovers? google their envrionment, im sure they can withstand cooler temps and low oxygen.. .

Hiya,

This is exactly what is happening with my Mollie at the moment. Its in an S shape and the middle left side of its body is making him float right at the surface and he can not move down in the tank without the middle of his body pulling him self up. He is also eating I am hand feeding him. Is this what yours has to? I need to know if its a disease as I have mine in my brothers tank that is full of his fish. Could it be an injury? Mine has been like it a week now! I dont think I can kill it either.

are they always like that? can they briefly un-S themselves? cause if not i would look into euthanasia.
