Hello all,

I have been reading everybody's rescue stories and most of you either have a spare tank ready or simply pick up the inexpensive ones from Wal*Mart.

My roommate who is a huge pet person always tells me to buy the eclipse tanks over all others. Something about the way they are made is better the filter is better etc. Well my issue is those tanks are 50+ bucks for the 3+ gallon ones. I read on here that you guys gobble up the inexpensive ones with out worry. Heck I can afford a 50 dollar 10 gallon tank and put some girls in it but I am terrified of putting them in unsafe conditions.

My question is this. What should I look for in tanks? What’s the must have features? What should I stay away from?

Thanks,
Jason

oooh I have a bonus question!

I am now feeding Hachi 2 pellets in the morning and then I am feeding him blood worms for dinner. How many blood worms should I give him?

Also I tried to give him a pea as a treat (Incase he needed poop help since his diet has been flakes or pellets for the last two weeks) He didn’t even investigate it. He was completely un interested in the pea. I peeled it and everything. He didn’t care. How exactly do you feed him peas? I put it in the tank and it quickly sank to the bottom.

Thanks again.

I have had great luck with aquaviews from wal-mart that are 10.44..... I think those are just fine, and see no need in getting a more expensive one. As for a 10 gallon female community, I just set one of those up and I got a 10 gallon from wal-mart with a whisper filter. It was 29.99. As for the bloodworms I'd say about 2, and with the peas, not really sure. Maybe he just doesn't like them, or he didn't see them? I'd say try again. Hope I helped.

If you didn't cut the pea in little pieces, I would try that. Once they try them, most bettas end up loving them.

Maybe wiggle the pea in front on his nose? LoL. Open up wide, here comes the chew-chew train...chuga chuga CHEW CHEW... :look:

lol meg

My 2 qualifications for tanks:
1. is it 1 gallon or bigger?
2. does it hold water?
:)

That's about it. If it's sold as a fish tank, it should be safe for them, and you can get some really nice sized ones for really good prices if you look around. PetSmart has prices that are really comparable to WM and in some cases, they're much better even! For instance, today I was in PS here in town and they had the TopFin version of the aquaview for $8.44.

As for the pea - take the sharp edge of a spoon and chop it up. This might mean that "sprinklings" of the pea go showering down into the aquarium, but he'll see it as moving "things" and maybe then go for them. Every single one of my bettas LOVES peas. Just gobbles them right up.

I feed my fish 3-4 pellets in the morning, 2-3 in the evening, and every other evening they get bloodworms and peas. Each one of them gets around 3 worms or so. The girls get more because one of my girls will eat NOTHING BUT peas and bloodworms, so i have to kind of overdo it on the worms to make sure she gets enough. With 5 other hungry little hags there is some competition for food in there. I also give them a pinch of daphnia every now and then - that's also good for getting things *ahem* moving, in place of peas - if ya know what I mean :)

Just thought I'd mention that, although the TopFin one is a couple of bucks cheaper, it doesn't have an UGF or a light :grr:
I thought I had found a really good deal when I saw those until I noticed that, lol

OOOOOoooh - thanks for pointing it out.
The aquaview IS a much better deal then. I didn't look closely enough at it to realize that.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA lmao.

Momma that hilarious (does it hold water  )

Anyway... I was told to stay away from eclipses b/c of the built in filter. If that filter should malfunction, you'd have to buy a whole new hood, and you;d throw out a good lighting system, or should the lighting malfunction, you'd be throwing out a perfectly good filter. Big waste of materials if you ask me...

Yes as riogal said, I'd get a 30 dollar 10g just b/c it comes with everything you need except the heater and decor and stuff. Their 50 dollar 10 g (glass one) is really a rip off. It comes with a 97 ¢ net and a 15 dollar heater. You'd save 5 whole dollars if you bought the 30 dollar one and heater separate. I'm sure you already have a net, but if you didn't you might could make the bank stretch enough to buy one. I really dont know how they get away with stuff like that...

Their 1 gs with the ugf are perfect for bettas b/c of the reduced water flow. They hate alot of flow, its bad for them. they have problems controling themselves if it is too high. Really, the cheaper ones are just fine!

Gosh, i've got to work on my rambling..
