Rusty Looking Algae

we've had a salt water tank for 2 years now and for about 3 months now we've been getting a rust colored algae. the fish seem to be fine it just looks really bad. the water seems to healthy except the water is hard that we use. any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks jim and lu

Sounds like Brown Algae, can be caused by weak lighting and/or excessive nutrients in the tank, from what i've heard its more common in younger marine fish tanks than mature ones. Have you tested the tank recently for nitrates? You may be better off asking this question in the marine section of the forum .

Diatoms?

It could also be a nasty colored coraline algae.
