Rust

I got some stainless steel bars to weigh down some bogwood.

First question, if its stainless, should I see it rusting already after 3 days?

Second, is rust ok?

Third, if so, or if not, how can I test for the metal in my water?

And finally, I have an Api testing kit which tests the usual 4 parameters. But I have seen more advanced kits which cover more tests, such as KH and chlorine. Why would I check these, is it necessary?

I would say, you have some iron in the steel? If i saw rusting, i would remove it, as usually it will discolor the water.

Well I got it from b and q and it was sold as stainless steel. Discolour in the water will be taken out by carbon in my filter.... Will it not?

It's the only bloomin thing I could get to keep the wood down, so i'd like to keep it in if possible. Though I thought I'd check to see if it would become a hazard to fish or plants?

Yeh of course, I know it's a risk, but that's why I was posting here, to see if I could find out for sure if it was good or bad.

I posted on here earlier this week asking about sinking it, and someone mentioned getting lead, but steel is all I could get. All the other methods failed- weeks in water etc. Mainly because it's hollow so is boyant

Why not tie the wood to a large rock instead of steel? Much safer

Stainless steel should NEVER rust, if it is, its a reject and should be taken back. The whole idea of stainless is so it can be put on boats and other applications open to the environment where normal steel would rust and become unsightly.

I weigh all my wood down with stones/rocks

I have a great bit of granite I tried to tie it to, but it is a really awkward shape, so wouldn't work. Lashing steel to it seems to have worked, but it took ages! What metal can I use then? Is lead the only metal I can use safely? I hear some metals are good for aquariums...

Well stainless steel would newer rust so it is not what you paid for
and attaching it with fishing wire onto stones is a great idea
rust probably will not harm fish unless there will be too much Iron in the water use a iron test kit to check if this is the case
and no Iron does not harm plants, they do need iron.

That's great thanks. I guess iron is the obly bi product of the rusting steel? Or is there anything else to worry about?
