I have always had it in my mind to stock my tank with Cardinal Tetra for the amazing colours. However I was in my lfs today & saw a big school of Rummy-nose tetra & i think I have fell in love. They are gourgeous.

Does anyone have any experience with these fish?

I've got 7 of them in my tank. They're lovely, really peaceful and really playful.

Mega shy at first, they would only stick to the bottom of the tank, but now they've settled, they're everywhere. Bit different to your normal tetra's as well and in the right light, they redness really pops.

They are fantastic shoalers and they are easy to care for. And they should have a long tank as they are very active :good:

My Rummys were the best shoalers out of all the fish I had in my community tank. They look amazing when healthy as their red noses really show up.
You`ll probably find they`ll shoal in formation, I used to call mine my 'Red Arrows' :good:

I think they`re very underrated as they`re lovely, entertaining fish imo :)

I keep them in a 13 gal with other small Characins (neon's, glowlights, black phantoms), a Male Betta, a Snowball Pleco and a few Amano Shrimp.

Great little fish, never been any trouble. Like EliseW said, when the red nose begins to colour strongly, they look stunning. They will accept any flake, frozen and live foods.

Although I must argue for Cardinal's aswell. Got a shoal in a planted 55gal...

James.

Rummys are fantastic for shoaling, I unfortunately only have 6 as I didn't think adding 10 in one go would be a good idea. 2 weeks later I went back to add some more after making sure there were no spikes... none left :(.

Rummys always shoal together though so closely and their vibrantly coloured nose is fantastic, so cool in larger groups.

My advice... if your LFS has them in stock but rarely has them, don't miss out on the opportunity. Make sure the water quality is good though like all fish and if their nose isn't deep red you might have a problem!

Agree with everyone else - fantastic fish, tight shoals, gentle, get a bit bigger than the smaller tetras.

They do like good water quality (meaning they will appreciate you not missing your water changes) and I think they thrive better in more soft, acid and warmer water, but they are a fish that's been around and are not overly delicate.

Yea, thats what I thought, my water is hard alkaline, so may have to go with the cardinals

My water is pretty hard here and even before I started to use a mix of RO and tap water for the Rams and Apistos, the rummys did really well and always had bright red noses. IMO they`re just as hardy as the danios I had :good:
