Hi,

I have recently been sold a ruby black shark on the basis my tank is big enough, based on the word of the person who sold use the fish. He said the growth of the fish will be stunted by the size of the tank (the tank is 20l) and from what I am aware from reading about it online, this is far too small, for the fish. Although, there is a good chance we will be getting a much bigger tank (160l) is this big enough for the fish? And secondly, I am also aware they grow from between 4"-6" (correct me if I am wrong?) anyway, how long is it sustainable to keep the fish in our small tank, is a year too long? At the moment the fish is about an inch, inch and a half, how long will it stay roughly this length, until it really starts growing, or does this vary from fish to fish?

Thanks in advance,

Table

Your 20l is not suitable at all, even in the short term, these fish need a minimum 4-foot tank long term. Unless you really are getting that 160l, you need to rehome this fish ASAP.

What else is in your 20l?

How was this 20l cycled?

Okay, thanks for the help, the 20l was cycled by putting the water in after sitting for about 5 minutes with tap safe in it, left for about three days in the tank, water tested, everything checked out okay, and the fish went in. I know I was a litlle impatient with it, but the people at the fish shop seemed to be fine with it, they said it was ok to put the fish in at this point. I am new to this hobby, so any advice would be great, at the moment there are three barbs in there with it, a tiger barb, a green barb and an albino barb, are these suitable for the moment?

Thanks again,

Table,

PS I will try to find a new home for it as soon as I can

Your tank isnt cycled! It takes between 6-8 weeks to cycle a tank! Read up quickly on cycling a tank with fish in on this forum and follow the instructions or they will die! You need to be testing your water daily with a liquid test kit to see how toxic the levels are. If you dont have one buy one straight away because you need it if you are going to keep fish even when the tank is fully cycled. Most fish shops dont have a clue on how to care for fish so you need to read up and quick!

As for the stocking barbs should be kept in large groups to avoid nipping but whatever you do dont add any more fish now until your tank is cycled.
