i bought a royal gramma last sunday and he has been doing very well staying out in the open almost all of the time. he was hiding for the first hour or so. anyway today i can home and he was not out so i wasnt to concerned. but then as the day went on no sign of him, which made me a little worried because i had problems with my fish vanishing. everytime a fish vanished he was a fish that slept in a tunnel in the liverock and i guess since no water flow really got into the rock they died of lack of oxygen or something. so i plugged up all the hole for now a hopefully can trade in the 3 rocks for new ones next time i get to the LFS. anyway i moved the one rock he slept in around a found him in a crevice and then refused for a bit to come out but what was weird was that he was laying on the rock not in the water like most fish. when he finally moved he found a place to hide where i could view him and he seems to not move to much and to lay on the rocks not on his side he is still right side up and all. is it normal for grammas to lay on rocks?

thanks in advanced!

i have a royal gamma as well, and mine still is in his "shy" moments. He too hides in a LR I have, and tends to kinda sit on the rock, and he even at times will rest upside on the LR for awhile. He's still doing perfect and eating plenty. So I wouldn't be worried. Only thing that MIGHT be affecting ur gamma is if there r other fish in the tank disturbing him. otherwise, like i said, just keep an eye on him, and keep high hopes :)

yeah there is a falco's hawkfish which is bothering him a bit, but there would be no way to get him out except to tak all the rock to one said and chase him with a net.

hmm yea that would be to much work for ur situation. like i said best bet is to just keep an eye on him. if he continues to hide and not come out, then id return him to your LFS since u dont want a fish which is harrassed in a tank or you cant enjoy. best of luck

well today i came come from school and the gramma was in a new hole but he had his head sticking out of the hole just chillin and lookin around, but around 7 p.m he started to come out of his hole and cautiously swim in the open for a bit before returning to his hole. now at 11 p.m b4 the light went out he was out swimming around still staying clear of the hawkfish but now he is eating some mysis and i tryed from baby clam meat which he loved  so he seems alot better, he does have a little big on ich on his fins but thats probley from stress/not eating for a day so im gunna give him time and if it doesnt clear up try to treat him.

sweet, yea it usually all works out in the end. if the gamma likes his tank, which he seems too, he will watch out for the hawkfish and become territorial in his lil region

My royal gramma does the exact same thing, he hides most of the day and is super active in the evenings...

I too thought he might be ill but he is eating fine now and although he doesn't get on that well with my clownfish he seems pretty content.

He seems happier since I introduced my Longhorn Cowfish who he swims around with most of the time now :good:

haha, i wasnt sure if there was something in there or not but i broke the rock apart and nothing was in there, so i broke the rock for nothing  but i reaquascaped it and it looks much better with better flow
