I have noticed since I purchased four m. aurora a couple of weeks ago, that one fish has very long stringy faeces; this has been every day since the purchase. I have read on a number of posts and stickies on this forum and others; about feeding more roughage in mbuna diets, the roughage being sourced for vegetable material. At present I am feeding a vegetable flake food that contains concentrated spirulina, also once a week I feed a frozen cichlid mix that contains, brine shrimp and raw spirulina with other odds and ends. My question to you other mbuna keepers, what do you find are the best veggies and which ones do your fish like the most?

I feed mine Tetra Pro veggie and Nutrafin spirinula sticks, nice and simple.

Mine get a variety of stuff such as: Malawi mix, spinach, Normal Flake, spirinula sticks and flake, JMC catfish pellets, Brineshrimp, Tetra Prima, Cucumber (they love this) and Krill.

Update update update!

The fish above is now not eating. I don't know how long this has been going on and maybe I have just missed it by not paying attention during feeding time.

This is the scenario at feeding time. The fish in question seems very interested at feeding time and it does consume the Tetra Pro vegi flakes but then, its spits them after a little while. Since I have purchased the fish he has not grown unlike the other fish in the tank, in fact he has begun to look rather thin and skinny. I do feed alternative food in the form of frozen mbuna food (but only once a week). What do people recommend that I do? Should I isolated the fish and try and feed it sometime else. Any responses will be welcomed. Tanks

feed actual veg rather than some crappy pellet that claims to hav veg in.

my 2 pence.

I've just seen a neat tool on ebay that I've ordered. It's like the twirly bit of a corkscrew and it's to put your veggies and cucumber on so that it will weight it down. Prob looks better than a fork in the tank :) I'm all for giving real veggies.

yea i use the fork too and its not too attractive.

i was thinking of getting something like one of them toast holders.

the one im thinkin of had about 5 spikes (not quite spikes but you kno what i mean.) and i want to use it for a full fruit salad bar lol.

need to find a new way to feed more anyway cos 5 clown loaches, a severum and a plec dont all fit round a piece of cucumber no matter how hard they try.
