Root Habitat

As the title says, what sort of small tropical fish live in a habitat of no plants and roots coming from above the water surface ?
Any suggestions ?

that could easily describe some Amazonian waters or brackish mangrove forests (to name but two)

.....so, LOTS of fish would be made to feel home in such surroundings.

What tank size is it? Have you got any pictures of the set-up?

Not yet, it's still in planning stage, but it's 30L cube (30x30x35cm) will have fine sand and maybe some small rocks and I'm going to hang redmoor root wood. Just thought I would try somthing different.
