Whilst dealing with the algae problems in my first ever tank, which I am now going to let grow like a jungle to try and combat the algae that is growing in there, I have learned a few things and trialed quite a few plants eventually deciding upon ones I like, ones I don't, ones that grow well, and ones that don't plus the ones that love algae and the ones that seem immune to it.

I have after all this time decided upon the look I want in the tank and am looking for any advice or warnings or even opinions or different ideas on what I should do.

The tank is the existing 33USG Tall with 2.5WPG and pressurised CO2 and will feature Lilys for the most part (Nympar Lutae, Nymphae Rubra etc) but I am looking to use these to block the high light!!! Why not cut the light I hear you say.

1. because its there already and would be a PITA to remod now I have it.
2. I want some of the Lily leaves to reach the surface and also I want the Red to come out in the leaves (Thisshould be point 1 really. lol).

Will the high light (2.5WPG) cause a problem if the Lilys are reaching up and blocking it?

The plants that will be 'sheltered' underneath the ceiling will be a selection of Crypts with Java Fern and Anubias underneath. Maybe using Anubias Barteri 'Petite' as a carpeting plant as this will be a tank that is planned to last for a long long time with minimum pruning (low light under the Lilys should I presume mean that only the odd Lily leaf needs pruning every now and again)

The wood I already have will remain after a serious scrubbing down, as will the slate mountain which I am planning to turn into a slate cave instead.

Substrate wise I will probably try Tropica underneath the playsand with some Leonardite that I have eventually found in the UK as the very bottom of the substrate.

I have most of the plants already growing in my algae infested tank so I shouldn't need to buy too many, and as I let the jungle evolve it will hopefully reduce the algae in my current setup as it grows awaitng my rescape.

The plants I have and will reuse are:
Tiger Lotus, Spatterdock, Anubias Barteri v Nana,Anubias Barteri 'Petite', Phillipine Java Fern, Christmas Moss.

With the Tiger Lotus can I turn 3 bulbs into 6 by splitting them or will this kill the plant? I know the Spatterdock can be sliced down the middle.

I will of course pack it with fast floating growers for the first couple of months too while everything slowly

Also any other ideas or suggestions on low light plants for the shadows underneath? wether it be crypt varieties or others. Pics of yours appreciated.

It will contain the current livestock of 11 cardinals (will introduce 9 more to reinstate their loriginal large group that the failed moss wall has trapped and killed one by one) 3 Otos and 4 Pitbull Plecs.

Will I need to dose fully as I do at the moment seeing as most of the plants that are in there are slow growers?

The Non CO2 Nano tank I had in the pipeline has not been forgotten and is also being planned for March time when the 33G tank should be up and running and growing nicely (but slowly)

Sounds like an interesting idea :) I think the idea of having a mat of floating lily leaves would be a great idea, as it would help prevent the algae and also allow slower growing plants to be used with a lower risk of them becoming an algae magnet.

Yeah

Until I got them myself I though what a pain with them dominating the tank but since I have got them I really like the stepping stones look. these are some of mine in my tank.

In this pic (my favourite) the Lotus on the right which is the tall one and has 15-20 leaves in all came from Aquatic Magic (as just a bulb) Then at the bottom is the Spatterdock which is only a month old and will grow taller as it is a high light plant then to the left of this is a lotus that Will sent me and it seems content to stay low and turn a brighter red.

I also have 1 more (again tiger from Will) on the left which is tall and reaches up through the overgrwoth there which is what I wanted anyway.

I kinda have the image of a pine forest where you are just looking through the trunks of the trees with the canopy above you and small bushes and plants on the floor.

Whats the tall stem plant on the left if you don't mind me asking?

Sounds like a cool idea :) Will be interesting as I'd think the light would be dispearsed a bit more, with the staggered lilly leaves at differing levels etc. Out of interest, would you run any algae risks when you prune one or two lilly leaves? What I mean is, due to the size of them, when only one or two are gone there'd be more light getting lower. Would this trigger an algae reaction?

Bolbits heudelotii looks good and grows almost in the dark. As for the algae in your tank, it will probably go eventually it always seems to retreat in an older tank.

I am lanning on quite a few and if I took a leaf from the top there would be another lower blocking direct light onto the low light plants.

The stem plant on the left is Rotala Rotundifolia (Tropica) I think it is Rosafolia variety.

Damn nusiance. I trim it down to 6" tall every weekend and the next weekend it is 20" tall again

Cool, I could do with some more fast growers ;) If you have any cuttings you don't want... :p

I'm afraid it's ridden with thread algae now. Sorry but it is a pretty popular plant iand is always in P@H

Just a thought, but if you like lilys and such, why not consider Barclaya longifolia for the midground. It is another bulb plant. It does well with 2.5WPG and produces some amazing flowers underwater. It's only drawbacks are that snails like to munch on its leaves, and it has a tendancy to die back after flowering, but otherwise a great plant. Something to consider.

I'm well ahead of you there Ll

My list at the moment from searching around (and finding out what my man can get me) is:

1 x Philippine Java Fern (To go with the one I already have)
2 x Nymphaea Rubra (To go with the 3 I have)
2 x Anubias Barteri (To go with the 1 I already have)
3 x Barclaya Longifolia
2 x Tiger Lotus (Zenkeri)
1 x Cryptocoryne Undulata
1 x Cryptocoryne Lingua
1 x Cryptocoryne Wendtii Brown (To go with the one I already have)
1 x Cryptocoryne Wendtii Green
1 x Cryptocoryne Spirlais
2 x Cryptocoryne Balansae (To go with the few I already have)
2 x Anubias Barteri Petite (To go with the 3 I already have)
2 x Needle Leaf Java Fern

It may seem a lot of plants but I'm sure it will lokk good when planted and they will all come from 1 supplier

Any other ideas welcome but no Echinodorous please. Not a fan of them at all
