Hi all

I got some new rocks for my tank today from my LFS and I am just a few short. I've managed to find a few big ones from my drive-way and was just wandering...

- Will soaking them in hot water make them ok for putting in the tank?
- Do I need to treat them with anything before putting them in?

THANKS

probably best to check that the rocks are ok to use first (theres a pinned thread around here that will tell ya).

once thats done and there ok then i jus get a bowl of hot water and a brush and give the rocks a good scrub.

thats all ive ever done and my aquariums have been fine.

people bake them in an oven to kill germs too i think.

If it has any dirt or any strange marks wash/scrubb it off. Then boil it for like 5 min. If the rocks have a strange odor, try to rinse it with lemon juice straight from a lemon to get rid of the smell. Then rinse it. This is wat i always done for my rocks.

It's abit risky unless you know exactly what type of rocks you're dealing with. Hopefully the rocks from your LFS will be inert (they won't alter the water chemistry - raise hardness etc) but the ones you've acquired from your drive might not be. There's also the potential danger that you might introduce unwanted chemical residues into your tank - if you've sprayed weed killer around for example.

Any idea what type of rock they are?

Cheers,
Luke.
