Depends how biotopically correct you want to be, in their native range rams would have no contact with rocks and the only features in the water would be the roots and trunks of trees plus fallen leaves on the bottom.

If your not bothered just go for both
 
Actually, although I voted 'other' for both, it occurs to me that we don't have a single rock in any of our tanks.

Just wood, plants & fake tree-roots, with flower-pots for caves in the puffer tanks.

EDIT - Ah yes we do! we have a blood great lump of dressed granite in the tank we keep cycled (with snails) but otherwise empty for fishie emergencies.

Im a both too :D I always put a little of both in my tanks. But different strokes for different folks. So use whatever you think looks best. After all its your tank.
