Ro Wter Unit Any Good?

Hi

I dont mean to rude, and you may well have an ro unit, but the membrane is just one part of an ro unit. Its a part that needs replacing after a certain amount of water is made.

If you have a unit already, and its a 50 gal per hour unit, then i would have thought that membrane would be ok.

Unless your Discus are wild, it's better to just leave the pH how it is...
Nope my discus are bread, my PH at the moment is 7.2 but my presurized co2 is arriving tomorrow so the ph will be lowered constantly and stay there at about 6.5 or so the main warry is to keep my ph leveld and not jumpy. Anything i can place in to my water which will make it softer then as an RO unit is abit of a cost to me at the moment especially spent so much money on co2 and Discus.

Cheers,
Serg

RO Water will only serve to make it even harder to keep the pH constant.

What are your Gh and Kh measures, out of interest?

Hang on, RO water increasing hardness and pH ???? You shure you're using the correct ouput hose Peter? (i.e. you are using the use water, not the waste? :)

You can use RO, but with local bred Discus, you don't realy want to move the pH. IME, dropping the pH below 7 for Asian imports or below that of the local supply for localy bred stock tends to realy upset them  German or wild stock will need it lowering however :good: Or at least, that's how it is in Leeds...

RO units ain't good on a meter mind. For every litre of use you get 5+ of waste, depending on tap water pressure and temperature...

All the best

how comes that RO is only approx. £23.oo

i thought these cost £75.oo +++++

how would this work, 1 water inlet pipe, and another outlet, and done?

baguuuu ;)

The item linked to is just the membrane, a cheap and probibly low-quality one, and not the full unit :good: A good quality membrane will cost almost as much as a new unit usually, but will last loads longer that those cheap knock-offs

A unit has an inlet, a waste and a use pipe. The inlet connects to the mains water supply. The use you run into a container to be used in a tank after the first half hour, unless it's new and then you want to flush off the resin on the membrane used to keep it wet in transit for at least two hours, and the waste either goes down the drain or is collected for washing the car, watering the garden, or for some other use... The first half hours water from the use will have a high TDS reading and wants scrapping, as does the first two hours of water ever made by the membrane, as it will be contaminated with the resin used to keep the membrane wet :good:

It's odd you always say that, because we get Asian stock into work, and when we check pH its normally around 6.5. We lower the pH and slowly raise it to our regular tap water pH which is around 7.2-7.4.

Well, when you import fish they are in sealed bags, yes? If so, where does the carbon dioxide go? Some into the air in the bag(s), and the rest disolves into the water as carbonic acid, lowering the pH. Testing bag water gives messed up pH readings if the fish have been there for a while, and airating the bag with the fish in to drive off the CO2 is a bad idea, even though it will give the propper pH reading. The lower the pH the more Ammonium as a pose to Ammonia there is in the bag, and the less damaging the build-up is to the fish. Airating will raise the pH and caurse issues with Ammonia poisoning for the fish :good:
