hello all

i live on second floor and seam to be forever carrying 25 lt containers of ro water up the stairs.

is it possible to make ro water in house anyway ?

also if so what are the minerals that my local lfs puts back into the ro water ?

You can make RO water at home all you need is a Reverse Osmosis System. Usually you want RO water to be "pure" when you buy it without minerals so you can add your own buffers and chemicals to alter it as RO water is stable. It is also helpful for topping up tanks as it will not drastically change your existing water. What exactly are you keeping? And what is your tap water conditions? You most likely don't even need RO water

i am keeping tropical fish,corys,panda garras,bristle nose,glass cats,bulldog pleco,bolivian rams,etc

im new to water stats as i used to run a 30lt tank on ro water all the time,no problems never lost fish,only this year i go given a 120lt tank which i put external eheim onto and built into a wooden frame which looks great but i seam to be having lots of troubles caused by high nitrate.

all year ive been using ro water and still losing fish due to high nitrate with using lfs ro water.ive tested my tap water nitrate level and i think its about 60 ppm? does that sound about right?

I wouldn't run RO with that stocking.

You really shouldn't have nitrate in good LFS RO water. To be honest I don't know what your LFS told you but you do not need RO for those fish they are pretty hardy. But as far as nitrates go it may also be a bit to do with how often you change water what is your WC schedule?
Oh and on the topic of not requiring RO water supposing you test your tap water levels such as Nitrate and pH you can just use dechlorinated tap water.

Well that might be your nitrate problem depending on your stocking you may need to do twice weekly water changes. Especially with Bolivians they really appreciate weekly water changes or bi-weekly changes. Just poor tap water into a bucket and then add a dechlorinator into the bucket and it will be instantly read for your tank

Personally I go with Seachem Prime great stuff and works instantly never any problems either.

every 2-4 weeks depending on if you see the flow lowering or the tank not being as clean as you'd like

i couldnt get seachem prime from a lfs which i pass on way home from work but ive just ordered some off ebay so i give it a go. many thanks for you help and advice.

Are we assuming that the notoriously innacurate nitrate test kit is right here? Lets assume it is for now.
60ppm wont be killing your fish. Heck some of us dose that in planted tanks.
With sensetive fish you really need to watch out for organic waste. Nitrates aren't a problem. I'd be looking at another cause for the deaths.
