Hi Everyone!

Firest of all i would like to say thanks to everyone who contributes to these forums as i have gained so much information over the last few months whilst researching marine tanks. Another thanks goes out to the people who have started juwel rio diares which is exactly what i need to help me gain the confidence that this could be done (no room for sump arhhhh)

Now i have began getting everything ready for the build. Photos will be added shortly.

What i have so far:

Juwel Rio 300 tank and cabinet (No sump setup)
2x Sicce voyager 4 Stream pumps.
Juwel lighting 2x marine white T5's and 2x blue T5's
Ordered 32kg of premium live rock.

Questions i am hoping for people to help me with are as follows

Which HOB skimmer? Deltec MCE600 or Reef OCtopus BH200?
Which Substrate?
By removing the internal filter will i need a HOB filter or will live rock be all the filter i need?

Daniel

enough live rock and that will be your filtration and pretty much all you need apart from some phosphate remover which i would reccommend running from the off.

MCE600 is a great HOB skimmer not had any experience of the reefoctopus items though, i run the MCE on my Rio400

Hi Everyone!

:hi: to TFF and the salty side

:good:

think of replacing one of the actinics with another white to aid coral growth

Questions i am hoping for people to help me with are as follows

Which HOB skimmer? Deltec MCE600 or Reef OCtopus BH200? Got to be the Deltec 600, same as R&S I run one on my 400
Which Substrate?
I used the caribsea Bahamas - as it has shells in as appears more natural to me

By removing the internal filter will i need a HOB filter or will live rock be all the filter i need?

On a tank that size I believe you need the hob skimmer - you can also run your purigen, phosphate remover in there :good:

Daniel

So,, what are your plans and lets here a bit about you :good:

Thanks guys.

Well my plans are for a reef tank but will be taking it very slowly. Im waiting on the live rock (this week hopefully)so i can start the curing process.

A bit about me? Well im 23 yo from Melbourne, Australia. Got into tropical tanks 2 years ago with a 30 litre little tank. Finally got my way with my other half. She allowed me to buy this 300 litre tank because i said i need more room to work with. When the tank arrived i decided to convert to the saltwater (darkside) to my partners dissmay! quote : "All you do is research fish tanks and give me no attention". A few months of study and im nearly ready to set up. But my brain is hurting from all the information!

Hoping to have pictures of live rock in the tank by end of the week. Will keep you updated!

Woo hoo, pet rock watching :good: and where might I ask is the photo of the empty tank :p

Nice start. Always liked the jewel tanks (I have a 450 converted to marine). Be interesting to see someone posting from Oz too. Everyone always thinks you guys must get the best marine livestock but from what I have heard your importing laws are really strict so getting some marine stuff can be more difficult.

Yeah our laws are very strict. The most common fish around us are usually from around our reefs.

Australia doesnt seem to like importation of anything very much at all. Shame considering some of the beautiful fish and coral we cannot get in australia. You can follow my journal if you like, you will see the fish we get most here in australia (once i get some). I think you've posted actually :p

Forgot to say in my last post, i really like the look of that stand. May stain my cabinet and hood into that colour :D Will match our floors :p Any updates?

Ah ha, you have the same colour stand and tank as me, looking forward to watching your progress

Seffie x

Thanks for that indir! Appreciate the kind words about the stand.

This thread might be a bit quite this week! Got my wisdom teeth out today  so i will be out of action for a little while. Am hoping to have you guys an update by the end of the week (with the live rock curing).

I alwyas hear "your from Oz?, you must get corals and fish easily" This is unfortunatly not the case. Australia seems to have these "nanny" policies about importing risky things. Quite frustrating!

Daniel

Well the live rock came in quicker then expected and i went into panic mode. I wasnt prepared as id just had my operation done so i quickly set up my tank with the powerheads and heater. I had it running for 4 hours before i picked it up....will this be a problem?
Its all in the tank now. Now for the long process of curing. Any tips and advice would be much appreciated!

Photos coming!

some nice rock there. as u are curing the rock i think u need lots of water changes. because it smells bad.
